The Vision for Abydos Learning International
A Message from Dr. Margaret Hale and Terrie Roberts – 2025

When Joyce and Eddie announced the leadership transition of Abydos Learning International (ALL), they quoted Brené Brown, who defines a leader as “anyone who takes responsibility for finding the potential in people and processes, and who has the courage to develop that potential.” Joyce and Eddie have long embodied this definition, nurturing educators and building a legacy grounded in the foundational work of Emig and Carroll, from Rutgers University to the diverse school districts of Texas.
As we step forward, Terrie Roberts and I are honored to continue this tradition. We are committed to guiding Abydos with integrity, vision, and a renewed focus on both people and processes.
-
We remain grounded in the original principles of Abydos:
-
Teachers of writing should write
-
Writing is a mode of learning
-
Teachers teaching teachers enables curricular change
-
Theory and assessment strengthen classroom practice
In 2025 and beyond, technology will play a vital role in extending Abydos’ reach. From virtual meetings and cohort support to digitized recertification processes and strategic use of social media, we aim to increase efficiency and connectivity. The updated website (www.abydoslearning.org) will serve as a central hub for information, support, and celebration.
We are also working to expand university partnerships, particularly with the University of Houston, to explore offering college credit for the three-week institute. At the same time, we plan to strengthen ties with professional organizations like TCTELA, CREST, TALE, and NCTE.
Together, we will honor Abydos' roots while growing its future—upholding the standards that have shaped so many and building a community that continues to thrive.
Thank you for your support,
Margaret A. Hale, Ed.D.
Terrie Roberts
