About the event
Dear Abydos Community,
After much reflection and conversation, Abydos Learning International has made the decision to pause our annual conference for 2026.
This was not a decision made lightly.
We recognize the significant pressures educators and school districts are currently facing. Tight district budgets, staffing and funding challenges, school closures in some communities, and shifting priorities around curriculum and professional learning have created difficult realities across the educational landscape. We also know that many educators are being asked to do more with fewer resources, making conference travel and self-funded professional learning increasingly difficult.
At the same time, the current movement toward highly scripted curricula in many districts has changed the space available for the kind of authentic reading, writing, and instructional decision-making that has always been at the heart of Abydos.
But we also know something else:

Thomas Newkirk
Tom Newkirk, lifetime educator and bestselling author of Minds Made for Stories, discusses eight powerful literacy practices-- and the democratic values that connect them. Newkirk argues that "the house of literacy has a thousand doors, and our job is to help students find one that will let them in." Yet for many students reading and writing is made unnecessarily difficult and uninviting. We need to tell a better story. Literacy's Democratic Roots celebrates eight door-opening ideas that can help us make room for all students.
